The Old Great Yarmouth Potteries - Heritage Open Day in Great Yarmouth, Great Yarmouth - Great Yarmouth

Herring Smokehouse Museum

About

Step into the past this September and explore one of Great Yarmouth’s hidden historical gems. As part of Heritage Open Days, we are opening the doors of the Herring Smokehouse Museum at 18 Trinity Place – the oldest surviving herring smokehouse in Great Yarmouth. This remarkable building, rich with the scent and story of East Anglia’s fishing past, is a rare and atmospheric glimpse into the town’s industrial heritage.

Now home to the On-Your-Side Centre (formerly known as the Great Yarmouth Potteries), the building continues to serve the community while preserving its unique character. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover the building’s fascinating history, from its days curing herring to its time as a pottery and community hub.

Join us between 10am and 4pm on Tuesday 13th, Wednesday 14th, Thursday 15th, and Friday 16th September. While there are no formal guided tours, friendly volunteers with extensive knowledge of the site’s history will be available throughout the day to answer questions and share insights.

Enjoy a visit to our newly opened café during your trip, relax with refreshments, and soak in the atmosphere of this special heritage site. Everyone is welcome - come and be part of Great Yarmouth's living history.
